MCAA SPSU Video Gaming Collaboration, April 29

Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) students recently visited Southern Polytechnic State University to view video games created to support Georgia Performance Standards in Science and Social Studies. The games created in collaboration with MCAA students are available to educators to use to reinforce standards taught in the classroom.

Visits MCAA, April 25


11Alive Meteorologist Allison Chinchar recently visited Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) fourth grade students to discuss weather topics such as tornados, lightning/thunder, and safety during severe weather. Students also visited the traveling Weather Van that films weather events.

MCAA March of Dimes
Fund Drive, April 22


Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) students recently raised $475 for the March of Dimes by participating in a Hat/Dress-Down Day, and by selling shoe cut-outs. Parents Partnered for Preemies of Northside Hospital matched donations totaling $950.

MCAA KSU Sustainable Keyhole
Garden, April 21


Kennesaw State University (KSU) students from the Students for Environmental Sustainability (SES) organization are creating a sustainable keyhole garden at Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA). The students installed a 350-gallon water barrel and built a composting bin, and they will work with MCAA students to dig the garden and begin planting produce during May. They will also teach students sustainability lessons throughout the year.

MCAA Celebrates Math Fluency, April 17


Marietta Center for Advanced Academics students in Mr. Chason’s math classroom celebrated achieving their i-challenge goal for math fact fluency. Chason promised to shave his head bald once 100% of his students met the goal, and they did!

MCAA Joins Governor Georgia STEM Day Proclamation, April 10

Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) Principal Jennifer Hernandez and students Savannah and Marcos were invited to join Georgia Governor Nathan Deal to proclaim May 3 as Georgia STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Day.

MCAA Tests Adaptive Devices, April 1


Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) fifth graders studying adaptive and assistive devices recently heard a presentation by Dr. Michele Perez, an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Perez demonstrated various adaptive devices and explained their function and purposes. Students were able to test the devices to see how they are used to help people.

MCAA Guest Speaker - Holocaust Survivor, March 18


Manuela Bornstein, a Holocaust survivor, recently visited Marietta Center for Advanced Academics(MCAA) fifth graders to speak about her experiences as a child in France during WWII and her family’s journey to safety. The presentation was also Skyped to Sawyer Road fifth grade students.

MCAA Fundraiser Aids Social Work Fund, Feb. 11


The recent Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) Evening of the Arts showcase included a silent auction for one-of-a-kind student art pieces. Proceeds totaling almost $300 from the auction benefited the Children’s Fund of the Marietta City Schools Social Work Department.

MCAA Students Learn Study
Skills, Feb. 27


Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) 5th graders recently learned about the importance of study skills from visiting Kennesaw State University (KSU) leadership students. KSU students taught small groups of 5th grade MCAA students how to create inferences with the use of text and graphic features, useful note-taking strategies, and how mnemonics can be used to help recall large amounts of information.

MCAA Celebrates National Engineering Week, Feb. 25

In celebration of National Engineering Week, representatives from Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) visited the State Capitol. Administrators and teachers met with state senators to talk about MCAA’s elementary Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) focus. Senator Hardie Davis, District 22 in Augusta, was so impressed that he plans to visit the school in the coming months.

Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) fourth grade science teachers, Susie Throop and Brandon Chason, recently dressed as the sun and rain to teach students about the water cycle.


MCAA Virtual Artist Visit, Jan. 31


Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) fifth graders experienced technology integration recently during a virtual visit with artist Julianne Chadwick via FaceTime. Chadwick’s pottery pieces tell part of her life story and were the inspiration for the students’ family tree
clay pots.


MCAA Celebrates Day 100, Jan. 22


Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) teachers and staff recently celebrated the 100th day of school by wearing costumes to look like they were one hundred years old. Other activities included a special breakfast for students that have been present all 100 days, student drawing self-portraits of what they’d look like at 100 years of age, and a student fashion show featuring shirts with 100 things on them.


MCAA Spelling Bee Winners, Jan. 18


Congratulations to Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) Spelling Bee winners! Akshat placed first and Aayush placed second. Akshat won the MCAA Spelling Bee last year and in 3rd grade he won the 3rd grade Bee. His winning word this year was “hibiscus.”


MCAA Jazz Age Celebration, Dec. 21

Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) fifth graders recently enjoyed “A Jazzy Good Time”. The students engaged in a variety of activities exploring poetry, art, food, and games of the era. They also learned the dance steps to The Charleston and participated in a grade-level dance and dance-off competition.

MCAA Explorers, Dec. 18


Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) fourth graders participated in Winter in the Colonies as the culminating activity to their Explorers unit of study. The students spent the day experiencing the life of a typical child living in colonial times by making homemade applesauce and butter, playing traditional colonial games, making tin art, weaving and using a feather pen for calligraphy writing.


MCAA Mentors Sparkle & Skate, Dec. 18


Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) staff mentors and students recently visited Sparkles Skating Rink. Staff members enjoyed an evening skating, playing laser tag and having dinner with their students.


MCAA Heart Art Project, Nov. 30


The EnviroDesign Club at Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) is one of five finalists in the LaLa Love Global Community Service Project. Children from around the world have created HeartArt to help raise money for ten children in Kenya to have life saving heart surgery. MCAA students used plastic bottle tops to create beautiful hearts. Sharing their hearts to heal hearts, the members of the EnviroDesign club hope you are moved by their artwork and will donate to help save the lives of children in Kenya.


MCAA Hosts Annual Family Engineering Night, Nov. 12


Marietta Center for Advanced Academics families recently visited the school for the second annual Family Engineering Night. Third grade families designed and tested cotton ball launchers, fourth grade families built slow rollercoasters and fifth grade families constructed working hot chocolate machines. Homeroom classes competed for the coveted engineering trophy. Community partners from Tech Matters, Kennesaw State University and the American Society of Civil Engineers were on hand for judging.












Singapore Chinese Girls School Visits MCAA, Oct. 24

A five member team from the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School recently visited Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) to learn about technology integration at MCAA and the innovative teaching practices in STEM education. The two schools plan on future student collaborations.

MCAA Skype Virtual Visit SPSU, Sept. 27

SPSU Virtual Visit
Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) 3rd and 4th graders recently Skyped with Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) architecture student Felicia Blake and Professor Adeel Khalid of the Aerodynamic Lab.  Students took a virtual tour of engineering labs, learned about 3D printing, and viewed a section of a Space Shuttle heat shield.  Dr. Hussein Abaza, SPSU Department of Construction Management was on site at MCAA to facilitate the visit and field student questions.

MCAA Junior Achievement Day, Sept. 21

Junior Achievement Day
Marietta Center for Advanced Academics recently hosted Junior Achievement (JA) Day. Representatives from UPS visited the school and talked to students about entrepreneurship and work-readiness for the global marketplace of the future. On their next visit, UPS representatives will work with MCAA 4th graders in the Packaging Engineering class.

Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) students recently explored chemical reactions while making homemade ice cream. Susie Throop’s class participated in an IBM learning module to support a grant funding initiative for the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs.
